Early Years at Bishop Challoner
At Bishop Challoner School, our Early Years program nurtures young learners with a diverse team, encouraging creativity, independence, and resilience from the start.
Traditionally, Early Years education, like nursing, was seen as a profession for women, discouraging men from pursuing it due to misconceptions about its nature being “unmanly”. Contrary to this belief, working in Early Years demands dynamic, energetic individuals prepared to go the extra mile for engaging and spontaneous interactions with young children. It is a challenging and demanding role, not for the faint-hearted.
Bishop Challoner School values diversity within its Junior School team, recognising the importance of providing male role models to young learners. Exposure to men involved in educational activities helps break gender stereotypes and fosters early interests in various pursuits like reading, singing, and creative expression. Boys and girls benefit from seeing men in nurturing roles, shaping their expectations of men in society.
A diverse workforce in education is vital, ensuring a well-rounded approach to teaching that mirrors the community's gender balance and fosters diverse interaction styles. Early Years education should prioritise representation and diversity, moving beyond traditional stereotypes and incorporating varied interests like sports to resonate with both genders.
At Bishop Challoner, children embark on their Early Years journey at the age of 3, benefitting from a nurturing nursery team. The experienced workforce, including specialised teachers, expose them to subjects like French, Music, and PE, enhancing their readiness for school while promoting independence and resilience. The emphasis on diverse teaching styles and exposure to different staff enriches their early educational experience.
In our school’s lush surroundings, nursery children have the chance to engage with our Forest School, an enchanting realm of outdoor exploration. Forest School offers our little ones a fun experience in discovering the wonders of the natural world. This educational approach to outdoor play embraces safety amidst woodlands, encouraging children to grasp the essence of the environment throughout every weather and season. Within this setting, they are empowered to take on challenges, exercise their creativity, and collaborate with peers. The Forest School nurtures their resilience, shaping them into resourceful explorers steering their own educational journey.
